History of the Club
On the 1st of May, 1926, a syndicate, headed by one of the former football stars Huntington Hardwick, was awarded an expansion franchise for Chicago. The Blackhawks started their playing career in the season of 1926-27. Other ice hockey teams to also start at the same season were the New York Rangers and Detroit Cougars. Although the owner of the team, Frederic McLaughlin, had no career in sports, he took a very active participation in the operation of the Blackhawks. McLaughlin had also appointed Bill Tobin, one of the former goaltenders who had played in the Western League, as his deputy. However, McLaughlin still directed his beloved team.
The McLaughlin era was from 1926-44. During this period the Chicago Blackhawks had a mixed career in ice hockey. In the 1927-28 season the team had the worst record winning just 7 games out of 44. After the McLaughlin era, started the Norris era which lasted from 1944-66. James E Norris was the owner of one of the rivals of Chicago Blackhawks, known as the Red Wings. The first eight years under the reign of Norris saw the Black Hawks practically without a boss. The Norris era was followed by the Bill Wirtz era from 1966-2007 and the Rocky Wirtz era from 2007-till the present time.
At present the head coach of the Blackhawks is Joel Quenneville. The team has won several championships in its entire career till date.
